Pittsburgh-based Matthews International Corporation was founded in 1850 by John Dixon Matthews, a skilled engraver who immigrated to the United States from Sheffield, England. In the early years, the company produced stencils, signs, steel stamps and other manual marking devices.

Matthews established the Bronze Division when the foundry was built in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As the demand for bronze castings increased, branch plants opened in Searcy, Arkansas and Sun City, California. In addition, the company acquired the Seneca Falls, New York facility where cast metal letters are currently produced.

The emerging international markets led to the construction of a facility in Milton, Ontario, the acquisition of Arrow Engraving and Foundry in Melbourne, Australia, and the acquisition of Caggiati Fonderie d'Arte in Colorno, Italy.

Matthews is recognized throughout the world as the leading manufacturer of cast bronze products for the memorialization industry.

Today, Matthews enjoys an international reputation for combining age-old casting techniques with state-of-the-art technology to manufacture high quality cast metal plaques and letters.
